      Prince of Peace
      By Jenny Komenda

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
      John 14:27

As the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ embodies a unique promise of calm amid the turmoil of life—a gift not only for each soul but for the whole world. This divine peace is more than a temporary balm; it is an abiding presence that “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7), offering us solace in ways we may not fully comprehend. The Reverand Billy Graham taught, “Christ alone can bring lasting peace—peace with God—peace among men and nations—and peace within our hearts.” We are invited to seek this peace, not as the world offers, but in the lasting comfort and spiritual strength that Jesus provides.

The promise of peace is one of Christ’s richest gifts, especially during life’s trying times. Christ’s perfect empathy means that He is profoundly present with us in our pain and anxious moments, providing a peace that comforts and sustains us, even when we cannot see the way forward. Jesus’s invitation in the Gospel of Matthew—to “come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden”—reminds us that He is ready to take our burdens, offering a rest that transcends our circumstances. This inner calm does not erase our struggles, but provides us with the spiritual endurance to face them with added courage and faith.

Jesus’s peace also extends to our relationships, urging us toward reconciliation, patience and kindness. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul admonishes to “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,” suggesting that Christ’s peace isn’t passive—it requires that we actively forgive, love, and support one another. C.S. Lewis reflected on this in Mere Christianity, where he described love as an action—even a habit—rather than a feeling, underscoring that Christ-like peace often comes as we seek to emulate Him, even (and perhaps especially) when such work demands great patience. Through Him we can find a renewed strength and desire to mend fractured relationships and succor hurt feelings. In the words of Russell M. Nelson, “as we follow the Prince of Peace, we will become His peacemakers.”

In today’s fast-paced, turbulent world, Christ’s role as the Prince of Peace invites each of us to pause and seek divine connection. We are reminded that, regardless of the conflicts around or within us, Jesus remains our constant source of calm. His profound peace is a gift that each of us can feel daily as we seek to follow Him.
