Hello friend! Thank you for joining me on this study of the attributes of Christ.
Here is my collection of questions to ponder, journal and meditate on, as well as a collection of scriptures, talks, quotes and other resources about the Christlike attribute of STRENGTH. I hope you feel closer to your Savior after taking on this study!
Love, Jenny
Questions to Consider
- The scriptures teach that Christ can make “weak things become strong.” Is there a weakness I have spent my energy resenting or hiding that God may instead be inviting me to consecrate to Him?
- When have I seen evidence that God’s strength is most visible in my weakness?
- Where in my life am I asking the Lord to remove a burden instead of asking Him to strengthen my ability to bear it?
- Christ says, “Come unto me … and I will give you rest.” What is the relationship between spiritual strength and rest? What does restful labor feel like?
- What have my hardest experiences taught me about Christ that I could not have learned as fully in easier circumstances?
- What strength have I gained through suffering, experience, or tested faith that I now have a responsibility to pass to someone else?
- Considering the Maiden, Mother, Matriarch framework, how can I use the Savior’s atonement to extend greater grace and support to myself and others in their various stages of growth and development?

Quotes About Strength
“This is a Christian paradox: when we are weak in ourselves, then we are strong in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; when we see ourselves weak in ourselves, then we go out of ourselves to Christ, and are qualified to receive strength from him.” – Matthew Henry
“The secret of all noble, heroic, useful, happy life lies in the paradox, ‘When I am weak, then am I strong.’” – Alexander MacLaren
“He said not ‘Thou shalt not be tempested, thou shalt not be travailed, thou shalt not be afflicted’; but He said, ‘Thou shalt not be overcome.’” – Julian of Norwich
“Those who serve God must serve him in his own way, and in his strength. He will only reap that corn, the seed of which was sown from heaven, watered by grace, and ripened by the sun of divine love. God will empty out all that thou hast before he will put his own into thee; he will first clean out thy granaries before he will fill them with the finest of the wheat. The river of God is full of water; but not one drop of it flows from earthly springs. Are you mourning over your own weakness? Take courage, for there must be a consciousness of weakness before the Lord will give thee victory. Your emptiness is but the preparation for your being filled, and your casting down is but the making ready for your lifting up.” – Charles Spurgeon
“God does not begin by asking us about our ability, but only about our availability, and if we then prove our dependability, he will increase our capability.” – Neal A. Maxwell
“When the Spirit is poured down, his people get very near and clear views of the Lord Jesus. They sit under his shadow with great delight. They lean on the Beloved. They find infinite strength in him for the use of their soul — grace for grace — all they can need in any hour of trial and suffering to the very end.” – Robert Murray M’Cheyne
“We can give thanks for the times the Saviour entered into our struggles and our triumphs and the occasions when we felt His grace, forgiveness, and power giving us strength to overcome our hardships and bear our burdens with patience and even good cheer.” – Patrick Kearon
“‘Come and see,’ and in your coming lay your burdens at His feet. He will strengthen your shoulders to better bear your burdens and give you new courage and hope for the journey ahead. ‘Come and see,’ and as you do so your eyes will be opened and you will really see, perhaps for the first time, who you are and who He is. You will come to see yourself as a child of God, of divine parentage, possessed of infinite capacities to grow spiritually and become more like Him.” – Alexander B. Morrison
“The fiery furnace does not automatically make us better. We must recognize, depend on, speak with, and believe in God while in the fire. God himself says in Isaiah 43 that he will be with us, walking beside us in the fire. Knowing him personally while in our affliction is the key to becoming stronger rather than weaker in it.” – Timothy Keller
“To the heavy laden it is Christ’s yoke, it is the power and peace of standing side by side with a God that will provide the support, balance, and strength to meet our challenges and endure our tasks here in the hardpan field of mortality.” – Howard W. Hunter
“The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ—whether it removes our burdens or strengthens us to endure and live with them like the Apostle Paul—is available for every affliction in mortality.” – Dallin H. Oaks
“Weakness, with acknowledgement of it, is the fittest seat and subject for God to perfect His strength in; for consciousness of our infirmities drives us out of ourselves to Him in whom our strength lies.” – Richard Sibbes
“God’s part is to put forth power; our part is to put forth faith.” – Andrew Bonar
“When we are weak, then are we strong. When most empty of self, we are most full of God.” – Charles Hodge
“I put down my burden and take up Christ’s yoke. This burden is the future. This yoke is love. But this yoke is light because yokes are, by definition, shared. No longer holding life at arm’s length, no longer aiming through this world at another, I’m also no longer alone. Not only am I yoked with Christ, I’m yoked by Christ’s love with the whole of this present world. Yoked in Christ with the world, we pull together.” – Adam Miller
“The duties that God ordinarily requires from us are not proportioned to the strength we have in ourselves but to the help and relief that is laid up for us in Christ.” – John Owen
“Most of us clearly understand that the atonement is for sinners. I am not so sure, however, that we know and understand that the atonement is also for saints–for good men and women who are obedient and worthy and conscientious and who are striving to become better and serve more faithfully. I wonder if we mistakenly believe we must make the journey from good to better and become a saint all by ourselves, through sheer grit, willpower, and discipline, and with our obviously limited capacities. Brothers and sisters, the gospel of the Savior is not simply about avoiding bad in our lives; it is also essentially about doing and becoming good. And the atonement provides help for us to overcome and avoid bad and to do and become good. There is help from the Savior for the entire journey of life–from bad to good to better and to change our very nature.” – David A. Bednar
“He heals the sick, and He can heal relationships. He multiplies bread and fish, and He can multiply the love and the joy in your home. … He gives power to the weary; and to those who feel powerless, He increases strength. They who wait upon the Lord will be renewed by His strength.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf
“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”
– Robert Keen, “How Firm a Foundation”
